The types of retainers we use:
- Bonded upper and lower retainer
- Removable retainers
BONDED RETAINERS
Oftentimes it is necessary to bond a small retainer wire behind the upper or lower front teeth to prevent them from moving back to their original maligned positions. Floss threaders are used to thread the floss to clean between the teeth and below the gums.
CARING FOR YOUR RETAINER
- IMPORTANT - WEAR YOUR RETAINER!
It must be worn 24 HOURS A DAY, except when you eat and brush your teeth. If you play contact sports (football, basketball, etc.) take it out for the game, but don't forget to put it back in! We will reduce the time you are required to wear your retainer after the first 3 months.
- KEEP IT CLEAN
When not wearing your retainer, place it in a glass of warm, not hot, water with denture cleaner or a drop of dish detergent. Do NOT use hot water to clean or soak your retainer, as it may cause warping. Brushing it with toothpaste also works well. This prevents plaque from sticking to your retainer and keeps it tasting good, too!
- USE YOUR RETAINER CASE WHEN YOU ARE AWAY FROM HOME
This protects it from being stepped on, thrown away, lost, etc. Do NOT wrap the retainer in a napkin, as it WILL get thrown away. Write your name and phone number, as well as Dr. Maxwell's name on your retainer case. This increases the chances of it being returned to you if you lose it.
- KEEP IT AWAY FROM PETS
Pets love to chew retainers. Unless you want your pet's teeth to look like yours, keep them away from each other.
- When taking your retainer out, only use the loops on the wire. When putting it in, push up on the plastic. Do not push or pull on the straight part of the wire, as it will bend easily.
- If your retainer is lost or broken beyond repair, there will be a charge for replacements. DO NOT WAIT TO CALL. Your teeth can move quickly. If you have any questions or problems, please call us and we'll be glad to help you. (360) 805-0900.
